G eorge N akashim a (1905-1990)
bought a parcel o f land on a
hillside in N ew H ope, pa. O ver
four decades he designed, built
and landscaped a com pound
that came to encompass 19

shop, all in the International
Style w ith traditional Japanese

O bituaries
H enry Sum m a, w ho brought
artistry and innovation to his
w ork in glass for over 35 years,
died Septem ber 27 after a brief
battle w ith renal cancer. Known
for his sculptures, vessels, plat-
ters and paperw eights, he was
59 and lived in Santa Fe. D ona-

.. K eith Lebcnzon, a mak-
er o f prized paintbrushes, died
o f a stroke on Septem ber 21.
He was 62 and lived in Beaver-
ton, OR. He began making
brushes in 1971 for use on his
own pottery. Calling him self
“ T h e Brushm an,” he exhibited
for many years at American
C raft Council Shows and other
venues, w inning awards and
a devoted following.
